Is Holly Golightly R-rated?

0 Comments 11 May 2007

Smoking in films has happened since, well, the invention of moving pictures. In fact, smoking is downright iconic in some films. But the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) is finally changing their film rating system after years of pressure from advocacy groups. Films are rated on their content, and a stricter rating is given depending on violence, sexual content, and other mitigating factors. Now smoking will be one of them. If a film is viewed as glamorizing smoking, it will be given a harsher rating. I highly doubt they are going to retroactively rate older films, but can you imagine the rating Breakfast at Tiffany’s would get? Everyone in that film smokes like a chimney! And even Marx Brothers films would get a PG or PG-13 rating because of Groucho’s cigar. It’s a strange thought. You can read more about the MPAA’s new rules here.
