If you didn’t already know, today is Audrey Hepburn’s birthday! If she was still with us she would have been 82 years old today, but you know what? Audrey is still very much with us. Her influence is as strong as ever, she’s as popular as ever, and everyone still wants to be her.

Just Being Audrey giveaway contest!

You’ve waited long enough, now here it is: I will be giving away three (3) copies of the gorgeous children’s picture book Just Being Audrey. Highly acclaimed and already deeply loved, this book is short and sweet and beautifully written. Designed for children but accessible to all, the book gives a lovely summary of Audrey’s life, from la petite ballerina in Holland to the trendsetting Hollywood icon to the UNICEF ambassador, all illustrated with divine full color (and often full page) drawings.

All you have to do is send me an email at admin[at]fabaudrey.com (replace the [at] with @, or just click on the link to automatically open your email browser), title the email “contest,” and tell me your name, what your favourite piece of Audrey Hepburn memorabilia is and why. I don’t expect anything big, this isn’t a school essay, and you don’t have to impress anyone here. Just something Audrey-related that you especially love or are sentimental about. It could even be a copy of your favourite film of hers and how it makes you feel. Don’t feel pressured, just write a little something from the heart. I will pick three – if I can! – and those three will be shipped a free copy of Just Being Audrey. That’s it.

The rules: this contest is open to anyone anywhere in the world, as long as you can receive packages from the U.S. Your book will be shipped directly from amazon.com. You do not need to give me any personal information other than your name unless I contact you saying that you have won and I will need an address to ship to. Please do not take it personally if you weren’t selected in this contest, there will be more! I am already quite sure it will be hard to choose just three entries, but I am a student and can’t afford to buy everyone books at this time.

The contest will run from now, Saturday March 19, 2011 at 1 pm PST, until next Saturday March 26, 2011 at 1 pm PST. After the contest has closed I will read all of the entries and face the difficult task of choosing three. Within one week I will contact the three winners and email them with congratulations and ask for a shipping address. I’m afraid that only the recipients of the books will be notified, though I thank you all in advance for participating and sharing your feelings on Audrey. Off the C(H)uff with Sam Wasson

I’ve just stumbled across an interview with Sam Wasson on Huffington Post, author of the new book Fifth Avenue, 5 AM. I know I’ve featured this book quite a few times already, and even an interview or two with the author, but I think this one in particular deserves some attention because it gives far more light into the book and why it was written than any other article I’ve read so far. It’s a good read, fairly short but entertaining and packed with information, and it also features the Breakfast at Tiffany’s trailer that yours truly posted on YouTube a few years ago.

I shall be getting a copy soon to review for you, but in the meantime, has anyone read it or at least flipped through it in the bookstore? What are your thoughts?

some quick tidbits

There’s a lot of nice little stories floating about, so I’m going to gather them all together for you:

- Our Dutch friend Joop says that dear Audrey was recently voted the most beautiful woman ever, which is quite an achievement! Lovely picture and short story (in Dutch) here.

- A dress from Funny Face recently went up for auction and was sold for the impressive price of $56,250.00, though I can’t seem to find which dress it is. Anyone? You can read more here. (From Kendal)

- And finally, an article on how Audrey Hepburn shaped sex. It’s an interview with Sam Wasson, author of the new Fifth Avenue, 5 AM book, and the interview was done at Café Audrey in Hollywood, a place where I’ve spent quite a bit of time! You can read the interview here, but be warned that Sam drops the F-bomb towards the end.

Updating three days in a row? I must be ill! Or there’s just too much going on for me to stay silent. Today finds us looking at the Italian Vogue website, where writer Cesare Cunaccia tells us about the time he met Audrey Hepburn in 1983. I don’t want to spoil anything, as the article is very sweet and telling, but I want to recommend you read the story for yourself, then watch the video put together to go with Cesare’s writings. I won’t say anything but this: it’s my two favourite things together in one place, which makes me very happy. Be sure to check out the sidebar on the right as well, it’s full of related Audrey articles, including Trend of the Day, giving style tips on how to channel your inner Holly Golightly.

I’ve been catching up with the guestbook entries, and there are so many sweet and lovely entries! I’m so glad the site makes so many people happy, helps them remember a wonderful woman, and helps newer generations discover her for themselves. While us girls may sigh once in a while, wishing we could look more like Audrey, someone by the name of Just Me has a perfect way of saying “Stay you”:

Is there anyone who can compare? Angelina Jolie seems to be walking in her footsteps don’t you think? But there can never be another with the character and gentleness that is reflected in that beautiful face … “the look” can be as she says … “attainable” …. but not the person and not the beautiful soul within …. from suffering and pain true beauty is born .. but the really beautiful thing is to keep the faith and hope when it so much easier to just give up on people and the world in general. For the person who created this website .. thank you. For all the young ones who are inspired by her graciousness and beauty … you are yourself beautiful.

the ultimate Mother’s Day gifts

I just got a little catalogue in the mail from UNICEF, and it’s encouraging their members to buy one of their Inspired Gifts for your mum this Mother’s Day (May 11th). I think it’s actually a very sweet idea, seeing that the holiday is just a made up Hallmark holiday anyway, and could you give the woman who gave you life* anything better than the chance to touch other childrens lives? The gifts in the catalogue range from an insanely affordable treated mosquito net to save children from insects and disease ($15), to a motorcycle used to speed medicine to unreachable people ($1,980)! Don’t worry, there’s plenty in between, I just wanted to highlight the price range to show that practically anyone can afford these gifts. Buy it in your mum’s name and she has just saved a life. Isn’t that fantastic? I think Audrey would have loved to have gotten that sort of gift.

I can’t thank you enough for your ongoing patience with all this! My computer is fixed, I’m just waiting on acquiring Photoshop and GoLive again so I can fix pictures and webpages, but I’ve still being working two jobs and prepping for a move. So after the move next month, the dust should settle and we should be back to normal.

To make up for my extended absences, here’s a little something for the ladies: an Audrey Hepburn 50s makeup guide, complete with an elfin Audrey look-alike model! Enjoy, and be sure to try it out on yourself sometime soon. Thick black eyeliner’s back in, ya know.

audreybag.com is now open for business!

After a little bit of a delay, audreybag.com is officially open for business and ready to take orders. Apparently, the site was delayed by just a couple of days because Luca Dotti was in charge of designing and maintaining the site, so communications had to go from Italy, where Luca is, to Santa Monica, California, where the Children’s Fund offices are. So for all you curious types out there who wonder what Luca’s up to, now you know.

Anyway, go look at the site already! You can sign up for the newsletter the site will release periodically, so you will be notified when the news page is updated and new collections are released. Yes, new collections! So if you were wringing your hands in despair because you couldn’t afford any bags from this collection right away, don’t worry. There will be roughly two collections per year, plus some one-of-a-kind bags, so there will always be something available for you. Make sure to read the news page while you’re visiting, as it has an interview with Sean talking about the inspiration and motivation behind the audreybag, and photos of the bags being made by hand in Italy.

stars of today channeling the stars of yesterday

Us Weekly’s website has a new article up about the celebrities of today channeling the stars of yesterday. Thankfully, there’s no mention of Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears here! And, not surprisingly, Natalie Portman is considered yet again to be our generation’s answer to Audrey Hepburn, not just for her looks, but for her humanitarian work helping third world women with FINCA International. Don’t forget the fact that Natalie donned the most famous little black dress in the world (left) before it was sold at auction, too.
