Andrea Dotti, Audrey Hepburn’s second husband, has died

No Comments 03 October 2007

Andrea Dotti, Audrey Hepburn’s second husband and father of her youngest son Luca, died Sunday in Rome after a botched medical procedure. He was 63.

There still isn’t a whole lot of information about him on the wire yet, but sadly all of the obituaries mention his unfaithfulness to Audrey during their 13 year marriage. Isn’t that a horrible thing to be remembered for? Either way, if you feel moved to send Luca and half-brother Sean your condolences, I think the best way to get your message to them would be through the Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund website.

My huckleberry friend

No Comments 23 September 2007

I was making huckleberry jam last night — yes, huckleberries really do exist — and needed to look them up on Wikipedia since I didn’t have a recipe on hand and wanted to make sure it came out alright. While I was reading up on this strange fruit, something caught my eye. Apparently, the huckleberry came to be known as something tiny and insignificant culturally, and from there on to something reliable. The slang evolved from “a huckleberry to a persimmon,” meaning the tiniest bit beyond what you could do or achieve, to “I’ll be your huckleberry,” which meant “I’m your man,” or “I’m the one for the job.” So, long story short, is this the true meaning behind the mysterious “my huckleberry friend” line in “Moon River”? I’m convinced! What do you think? You can read more about the evolution of the huckleberry as a cultural reference here, if you need more information.

The berries themselves, by the way, are very similar to blueberries but are more tart in flavour, and the jam came out perfectly. 🙂

more Audrey Hepburn dolls!

No Comments 21 September 2007

As you may know by now, I’m a pretty big fan of Audrey Hepburn paper dolls — the virtual kind, since I haven’t yet found any real paper ones. (Previous dolls are here and here.) Well today I received an email from Elizabeth of Cartoon Emporium, and they’ve just put up a new Audrey Hepburn doll! I love this doll because they did a really great job on Audrey’s face, and unlike some other dolls, this actually features clothes from Audrey’s movies. You can play with Audrey here, if you’d like. And thank you to Elizabeth for sharing this and indulging my weaknesses. 🙂

rare insight into Audrey Hepburn

No Comments 14 July 2007

There’s a new video on You Tube from a made-for-TV biography that I don’t think I’ve ever seen. The clip that was uploaded was from a Chinese airing, but maybe it’s been aired in English-speaking countries? Either way, it’s fantastic interviews with Mel Ferrer, Henry Mancini (composer of “Moon River”), Stanley Donen (director of Funny Face and Two For the Road), and Hubert de Givenchy. It’s a really fascinating segment to watch and gives more insight into Audrey’s career and relationships with these men, you really just have to see it to appreciate it. I certainly can’t do it justice!

Holly Golightly is a puzzle

No Comments 05 June 2007

Literally. I was out today shopping for some new board games (Cranium in particular — does a better board game exist?), and came across this lovely 1,000 piece puzzle! I haven’t been out to get any new puzzles lately, so I wasn’t looking for an Audrey one, but this one is really fantastic. A Breakfast at Tiffany’s poster that hasn’t been used to death with great use of colours, and Ravensburger makes excellent, high-quality puzzles that will last and last, so you can put Audrey Hepburn together again and again. You can order this puzzle online to be shipped to you, and their website is multilingual as well, so click here to choose the country that’s closest to you to start shopping.

Audrey Hepurn tulip dedication ceremony

No Comments 14 May 2007

For those of you who either don’t own or just haven’t seen the new Gardens of the World DVD set, there is a bonus disc filled with outtakes and other goodies. One clip in particular is worth it alone. It’s the official dedication/unveiling of the Audrey Hepburn tulip, a lovely long-necked white flower. The ceremony took place on a rainy day at Huis Doorn, the manor house that used to be owned by Audrey’s family before the war. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but you should definitely watch if you want to see Audrey speaking her native Dutch:

My Best Friend: Audrey Hepburn continued

No Comments 12 May 2007

Last month I posted about a new BBC biography series called My Best Friend, and how Sean Hepburn Ferrer had filmed an episode about his mum, Audrey Hepburn. Beaker from L’Ange des Enfants was kind enough to send me a copy of this, and I’ve just finished posting it to You Tube for everyone to enjoy. 🙂 If you live outside of the UK then chances are you haven’t seen this biography yet, and I highly recommend that you do. Not only does it give you yet another side of Audrey, but we see more of the elusive Sean. The program seems to have been filmed at his house in Tuscany, but it also shows new footage of La Paisible, Audrey’s wonderful home in Tolochenaz, Switzerland. Sean is very open about his relationship with his mother, and talks quite frankly about his parents’ divorce and what went wrong. It’s the most I’ve ever heard on the subject, and it gives a lot of insight to both Audrey and Mel Ferrer that most people either never got or seemed to have missed entirely. All in all, it’s a lovely biography with fascinating content and great pictures, a good way to spend half an hour.

let a lovely face cover your messes

I love the idea of using screens not just as decorations, but as real furniture. I love it when films actually have people changing behind screens, or screens are used as room dividers, as opposed to just having them nicely folded in a corner, doing no one any good. Unfortunately, I always live somewhere too small to actually use my own screen. Maybe this will motivate me (and you) to move to a bigger place and start using room screens:
