Fernanda Gattinoni

No Comments 16 July 2010

Yet another costume exhibit! This one is set in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, next to the Eiffel Tower but distinctly Italian in feel. It’s a showcase of Italian designer Fernanda Gattinoni’s designs from the 1950s and 60s, and while it mainly focuses on her evening gowns for Italian starlets worn at film premieres and other galas, there is a separate section dedicated just to her designs for War and Peace, which Audrey Hepburn wore. While the film may be more than a big long, I do love watching it just to see how stunning Audrey looks, especially in that airy white ballgown with the Empire waist (left).

Audrey Auctions

5 Comments 04 October 2009

Now that I’m laid up in bed for a day, I have time to share some auction news with you! (Before I must finish some homework, that is.) First, Lyon & Turnbull in London just had a rather large Modern and Contemporary Art auction yesterday, and featured a few pictures of Audrey photographed by Bob Willoughby and a couple other photographers. From what I can tell, two of the five prints were sold, and went for £400 and £600, not a bad price!

hello again

No Comments 30 March 2008

I can’t thank you enough for your ongoing patience with all this! My computer is fixed, I’m just waiting on acquiring Photoshop and GoLive again so I can fix pictures and webpages, but I’ve still being working two jobs and prepping for a move. So after the move next month, the dust should settle and we should be back to normal.

To make up for my extended absences, here’s a little something for the ladies: an Audrey Hepburn 50s makeup guide, complete with an elfin Audrey look-alike model! Enjoy, and be sure to try it out on yourself sometime soon. Thick black eyeliner’s back in, ya know. 🙂

showing your inner Audrey: part two

No Comments 12 November 2007

The costume contest is closed now, and we had so many fab entries! Even though all of these lovely ladies were channeling Audrey Hepburn, they each managed to have their own style as well and be completely unique about it. To give each of these ladies some room to shine I’m going to break up the last of the entries (the ones okay with sharing their pictures, anyway) into two groups. And so, without further ado, is part two of your Audrey style:

How to be your own fashion guru

1 Comment 29 October 2007

There are no two ways around it: Audrey Hepburn is a style icon. But what makes her an icon? What can you do to be your own style icon? According to Nina Garcia’s new book, The Little Black Book of Style, you just have to be yourself. What makes the great fashion icons Audrey, Jackie O., Marilyn Monroe stand out from the crowd is the fact that they ultimately forgot about what was in fashion from season to season and focused on what worked best for them, building their own style. Garcia and Givenchy think the same: both have said that anyone can be in fashion, buying the latest looks, but not everyone has style, knowing what works for them and making it their own.

Honolulu’s first Fashion Week celebrates Audrey style

No Comments 09 October 2007

As Honolulu, Hawaii holds their first Fashion Week, The Honolulu Advertiser brings back their recurring article, My Fashion Icon. Today’s item is about a young woman named Willow Chang and her fashion icon, Audrey Hepburn. The article mainly focuses on what Willow has to say about Audrey — beautiful, kind things, focusing equally on Audrey as a fashion icon and Audrey as a deeply feeling and caring person. Willow also theorizes on where Audrey would hang out in Hawaii, what she would be wearing now, and even what roles she would be taking if she were in her prime now. There’s also photos of Willow in her off the rack finds that she’s put together to get her own version of Audrey style, something that any of you can easily do with a little determination and a lot of patience. The Golden Age of Couture now open

No Comments 01 October 2007

Just a quick reminder to Audrey’s UK fans that “The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947-1957” is now open at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. I first mentioned this exhibit back in March when I first heard about it,* but since then the Museum has put up a special website dedicated to the exhibit. It’s really nice because it has a fraction of the collection up for viewing, and a Givenchy couture gown is one of the featured, a beautiful one at that. From the site you can send e-cards with preselected pictures of couture items, and book tickets if you’re available to go. The coolest part of all is that you can download and print out a pattern for a couture-inspired dress, which you can then make at home! If you’re really into shoes, there is also a competition to send in your original shoe designs for a chance to have your design shown on the V&A website. Intrigued? Click here to see more.

*Reminder: the blue cape Audrey wore in Funny Face is on display at this exhibit.

50th Anniversary edition of Funny Face coming soon!

No Comments 07 July 2007

Great news from loyal reader Bill! The release of a 50th anniversary special edition of Funny Face (Region 1) has been announced, with a release date of October 2nd. This new DVD will feature a few items already seen on the original DVD — the Paramount in the 1950s featurette, original theatrical trailer, and photo galleries — plus a few new featurettes, including a cryptically named Parisian Dreams and a new piece on Givenchy and Audrey called A Fashion Designer and His Muse. You can already pre-order through Amazon so you’ll be sure not to forget, and it’s close enough to the holidays so you can put it on your wish list without having to wait too long. Mark your calendars!

Speaking of Givenchy, I came across this story recently. Apparently, the fashion guru is of the personal belief that fashion in and of itself is dead. People seem to only be fixating on popular accessories and following mindless fads, rather than spending the time (and money) to actually find what works on you as an individual and look good. It’s a great read, though fairly short, and I agree with him on all accounts. If I could afford it, he could dress me every day of the week. 🙂
